The possibility of undergoing a root canal may make you feel nervous, but at John Day Smiles: McMillan, DDS, PC, we take every step to ensure your procedure is as comfortable as possible. Dr. McMillan uses advanced root canal therapy techniques to help treat the damaged tooth and restore the health of your smile.
If our dental team decides that you are a good candidate for a root canal, we will address all of your questions and concerns throughout the entire treatment process.
What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy stops dangerous oral infections caused by a damaged tooth in their tracks! This treatment is designed to restore the previously damaged tooth to its full function, and usually lasts a lifetime.
During root canal therapy, Dr. McMillan removes the living tissue inside your tooth - including the nerves - and excises any bacteria or decay. After this step is completed, she cleans out the chamber, treats it with a medicated material, and then fills it.
Once all signs of infection are eliminated, Dr. McMillan will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth until your permanent dental crown is placed during your second visit.
Do I Need A Root Canal?
Dr. McMillan may recommend a root canal if you’re experiencing:
- Swelling and tenderness of your gums
- Severe tooth pain or sensitivity
- An abscess on your gums
- Sharp pain when biting down or chewing
These signs can indicate that decay has reached the pulp of your tooth, resulting in infection or an abscess. If left untreated, you could suffer from a serious infection or even lose the damaged tooth altogether.
Dental abscesses, cracked teeth, and large cavities cannot heal themselves. If you are suffering from any of these painful conditions, schedule an appointment with Dr. McMillan as soon as possible.
Our John Day dental specialists are here to determine if root canal therapy can save your tooth and free you from pain. Call John Day Smiles: McMillan, DDS, PC for an appointment today!
